Leif Erikson was the first European who set foot in the land of America 500 years before Christopher Columbus. He came to America in the year 1001 AD, whereas Columbus reached there in 1492. It is believed that since the Vikings made very few voyages to America after Leif Erikson, the discovery remained rather unknown. Leif was born in the year 960 AD in Iceland and was brought up under the guidance of a person called Thyrker. It was Thyrker who taught Leif almost everything there was to know about navigation, reading and writing runes, how to use weapons, the Russian language and also trade.
As a passion Leif enjoyed listening to the tales that he sailors told and hence never missed any opportunity to interact with them whenever any ships came into harbor. During his teen when he was accused of murder, he ran away and set sail towards west to discover a new land that he had heard about. This new land is today America.
