The total amount of human intelligence and inventiveness in the world is greater with more people. More people can spend less time on protecting themselves and acquiring the basics of life.

Among organizations, an optimum size seems to be 70-150 people. Below that number, there isn't as much energy and synergy as one might like. Above that number, communication becomes too difficult. Some companies even go so far as to limit the number of folks at any given site to this range.

Below the lower limit, growth is good. Above the upper limit, growth tends to be a liability, rather than an asset.
