Yes, there is evidence to suggest that bank notes are being sidelined in favour plastic, especially since the introduction of chip-and- PIN credit cards makes carrying large amounts of cash much less attractive.

The greatest motivation in moving towards a cashless society is undoubtedly the internet where web-based card transactions have been mainstream for years now. Combined with the UK's credit card culture and web adoption, the useage of plastic embraces as much buying groceries at the local store as shopping online. In every facet of life in the 21st Century, sterling is making way for plastic.

Go into any supermarket, for example, and you will be hard pushed to find a product on the shelves that doesn't carry a web address somewhere on the packaging.

Perhaps we should not be surprised to learn that the fastest growing population of online shoppers are the silver surfers, senior citizens with time and money on their hands. They have abandoned daytime TV for browsing and shopping online with their relatively high free disposal incomes. And guess how they and the burgeoning hordes of other online shoppers want to pay?

Whats your definition of cash? There will always be currency.  Postage stamps were used in the civil war as currency. If we don't open our eyes soon world currency wont be backed by precious metals anymore. A countries natural resources will determine  currencies value.
