Those are the average people.  My husband isn't a hunter by trade, he hunts for sport.  He's your average Joe.  My brother has a gun that he will probably never use.  He has it because it was passed from my grandfather, to my father, and then to him.  Or take my sister for example, her husband bought her one for protection when they discovered they had a peeping tom (they did file a report too, and no, she's never had to use it).  Several friends of mine have them simply for sport.  They'll go to a shooting range simply because they enjoy it.  It's like golf for them.  These people that use for sport are just like the gun collectors in their appreciation.

Thank you for your reply. This is not a debate on the right to own guns. I was interested in the psychological reasons behind the desire to own guns, especially for those people who have no practical need for them.
This is one of the very few countries that it is easy to legally own firearms. Perhaps I can be persuaded to see what I've been missing for not having one. : )

Why do I have a gun for protection.  To save my own life.  Three African guys tried to brake into my house over this past weekend again.  The previous time witch is a couple of months ago they were actually in my house.  They don't think about your life when they try to kill you to get to your things so that is why I have one.

Thank you for your answer. I hope everything has turned out alright for you. I also hope that you never have to use the gun for that purpose, and that the local authorities are able to protect you in the future.
While I have no use for firearms, I do not object to others having them. I was just curious as to why people want them.
Best of luck to you.

The answer above are a syndrome of a society that was created with the help of the gun. Other societies went through this hundreds if nit thousands of years ago with other weapons. This second group of societies has matured and evolved more peacefully. The united states and other such gun carrying nations have a lot of growing up to do. They still hold on to the macho image of the gun toting cowboy. Live by the gun die, by the gun. Your choice. But sadly this self inflicted social disease has spread through the medium of cinema, tv and music to other nations.

First of all, I have guns for self and home protection.  I live 30 minutes from a cop, a lot can happen in that amount of time.  Our Constitution actually requires that our personal protection is our own responsibility.  That's why cops can't be sued if their too late getting to a robbery and everyone is dead.  Secondly, I'm an avid hunter, I hunt deer, hogs, squirrel, rabbits, turkeys, and occasionally coyotes.  I also just like to shoot guns.  Thats why I like my AK-47s and my AR-15.  I also like to see how far away I can hit a target.  I can hit an 8 inch group at 500 yards.

Our forefathers were wise enough to include guns in the constitution. An unarmed society can be easily controlled by government. Our founding fathers knew this. A dictators wet dream is a body of defenseless slaves.
Do you think if guns were banned, a utopian society would emerge? Wrong! Only government and criminals would have guns, or dangerous devices as you state. Your head truly is in the clouds.

I think we have a few things we can agree on. I’m very glad you are careful when it comes to gun safety. So many people are so irresponsible, resulting in so many senseless tragedies.
What I meant was: Guns are just pea-shooters when confronted by a well-trained army—not really an effective tool.
I constantly force myself to see things from the other side. It is sometimes uncomfortable due to false pride and stubbornness on my part, but often I’m able to learn something new, or at least gain new understanding that not everyone was a complete idiot.
you can call me WOLF
Let me guess: You're a republican who is *kinda* racist and goes hunting for the fun of it.

If your referring to me, yes hunting is fun, but whatever i shoot , i eat. Yes i am republican, and no, im not racist. By stating that i assume your a democrate, you hate whittey, and you want the government to have a say so in every aspect of your life. Keep tipping your glass of grape kool aide pal.
