California has always been a Northern state. From the Civil war to present. It's actually a Western state in terms of the U.S. geography.

North or South? Or actual direction? It was a northern state as far as the civil war goes, but it is not in the north. Last I checked it bordered Mexico, Oh wait Canada is in the south and Mexico is in the north...SMH... LOOK AT A MAP!! Is that so difficult?

Here's two comments from the internet.  The first covers more "bases."

Depends on what direction you are looking at it from and what era. I don't think anyone but the Russians regarded it as being to the south, and the Spanish regarded it as being to the north. Americans don't regard it as being southern, northern or eastern, so that doesn't leave too many other choices. I would go with Southwestern or Western, myself.

It's considered a western, pacific, & a southwestern state.

I don't know much about the states ... But I know Cali is the state with the letters on the hill ... And the bus tours of the homes of the "stars" and I also know I can reach LA on a less than 3 hour plane ride from van when I'm there for work ... But I am going to Vegas instead.. That's all I know about that then :)
