We had a lady in our neighborhood that always gave out nickels, which was the cost of a candy bar back then. It just didn't add much weight or bulk to our bags and we were always disappointed.

I always hated it when some health food nut would give out little boxes of raisins. Really? It's Halloween for goodness sakes!

I LOVE IT! . . . I the idea that this neighborhood was giving out large candy bars but was always "Just down the road a bit".

We live in a cul-de-sac neighborhood with not a lot of homes and always too off the regular roads to look for. We would always either give large amounts of candy to those children within our neighborhood, or end up eating the large amounts ourselves.
When my oldest was 12, he wanted and planned to do the house up to be the scariest . . . we had fog machines, projectors with floating heads, and scary music . . . He was in a full sized monster costume, and I was in theatrical make-up . . . it was heart breaking that we only had just 3 trick-or-treaters that year . . . he was so deflated. I guess it was a life lesson, but unfortunately I had front row seats to this one.

Awww, a child's disappointment after working so hard is a harsh reality. Always hated that life lesson for my kids too. You're a good dad, I'm glad he had you to go through that with him.
Goof morning, Otis.

There were a lot of penny candies given out in our neighborhood, but we thought it was all great.  Tennessee Ernie Ford lived on the street behind us before he migrated to more glamorous digs ... He and his wife always served hot chocolate and donuts.  Their kids were about our age, and we loved stopping there.

Isn't trick or treating for kids? I doubt you opening your door to a 6"2 tall guy with a creepy dark costume that makes him look like the angel of death would make you go: "Aww...You're so cute, you get some candies."

I don't think there was anything worse, for me, then to get the Circus Peanuts . . . Usually not even fresh ones at that.

Heck, I'd prefer an apple to those things.

So . . . when you get the box, and are looking through the packing to find the gift I sent . . . take note, that IT IS the packing that is the gift . . . LOL!

I'll eat them. They taste better than the white packing peanuts.

Ha ha Otis,

Where I grew up nobody had much money, although I didn't realize it then... as a consequence of that, everybody always went all out on Hallowe'en and gave the kids wonderful expensive candy, and often homemade things too!

I can remember running all over the countryside, for hours and hours, ending up with a huge stash that lasted for months...and nothing EVER was small or cheap or disappointing.

That phrase "nobody had much money, although I didn't realize that then" is worthy of a meditation session.

Big smile for you, Tom...and yes that experience (of money as not really needed) has given me a lot of freedom as an adult..

In my day, all that was EVER given out was 'cheap' candy .. And as kids, we were thankful.  Very seldom did you ever get an actual chocolate bar, because in those days, people didn't have a lot to spend on candy .. If you were REALLY lucky you got a can of soda pop.  As much as we enjoy the pop .. It was freek'n heavy to carry! .. If you REALLY hit the jack pot you may be lucky enough to get a candied apple ... But, nonetheless .. We were thankful!

The only things i really recall is that one house at the top of the hill handed out donuts, still warm from the making.
