The current prime minister of Pakistan is Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani. He has been the elected leader of Pakistan since 25th March 2008. He was born in 1952 and represents the Pakistan Peoples Party.

The party is a social democratic centre-left political party; the equivalent of the Labour Party in the UK and the Democrats in the US. The party, founded in 1967, has always had the same motto: "Islam is our religion; democracy is our politics; socialism is our economy; power lies with the people."

It is the first spell in power the Pakistan Peoples Party has had in a while; the Pakistan Muslim League had previously been in power since 1997, with six different leaders in that time:

The last Pakistan Peoples Party leader before Gillani was Benazir Bhutto; the first woman elected to lead a Muslim state. She was actually elected twice, serving between 1988-1990 and 1993-1996. She was removed from power both times on corruption allegations, and after the second such accusation she put herself into exile in Dubai. In 2007 she returned, and agreed a deal whereby the corruption charges were dropped, but tragically she was assassinated. Shots were fired at her and a suicide bomb went off, with the impact of the blast resulting in a fractured skull.

The Pakistan Peoples Party has only been elected to power four times, and a fifth if you include an early election to power as the Awami League.
