The current prime minister of Pakistan is Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani. He has been the elected leader of Pakistan since 25th March 2008. He was born in 1952 and represents the Pakistan Peoples Party.
The party is a social democratic centre-left political party; the equivalent of the Labour Party in the UK and the Democrats in the US. The party, founded in 1967, has always had the same motto: "Islam is our religion; democracy is our politics; socialism is our economy; power lies with the people."
It is the first spell in power the Pakistan Peoples Party has had in a while; the Pakistan Muslim League had previously been in power since 1997, with six different leaders in that time:
