Blood Gang hand signs are a type of hand gesture, or sometimes a series of hand gestures used to denote gang membership to the group known as the Blood gang. Though there are many hand gestures that the Bloods use, the hand signal that they are most known for is their gesture of putting their hands together to indicate "blood”; a reference to their namesake. The Blood Gang originated in Los Angeles and is also famed for wearing the colour red, another symbol to indicate blood.
These hand signs reflect the Blood Gang alphabet, which is often referred to as a type of code used to convey secret messages to other gang members. This type of alphabet or code is most frequently used in places where members resides, and have been further observed in prison environments, where a hierarchal gang mentality tends to dominant the dynamics of the inmates. This type of code has been used transfer anything from information of a personal nature, to requests from gang leaders to "take out" or kill other gang's members, or even law enforcement. The blood gang is of course not the only gang that uses such a form of communication, it is simply one of the more well know gangs due to its size and age.
It is believed that Blood Gang was founded in 1972 after a dispute that a occurred within another L.A. Gang organisation known as the Crips. The Crip gang’s definitive colour was blue and they were known for demonstrating their gang flag on their left side. As a statement of opposition, the newly formed Blood Gang adopted the opposite colour of red and advertised their flag on their right side. The Athens Park Boys and Pueblos later also joined the Blood alliance, and soon after, other independent gangs who had been threatened or attacked by the Crips also joined the Blood alliance as well.
