Smt. Shashikala Kakodkar was the first lady Chief Minister in India. She was elected the chief minister of Goa, Daman and Diu. She was the daughter of Shri Dayanand Bandodkar the first Chief minister of the union territory. After Goa was liberated in 1961, Indian government took over Goa, Daman and Diu as an Union territory. Dayanand Bandodkar was elected as the Chief Minister of Goa, Daman and Diu on 20th Dec, 1963. He ran his government till 2nd Dec 1966 and then it fell but was soon re-instated through opinion polls and he formed his second government 1967. He was re-elected after his term for a third term but he died on 12th August, 1973, after which he was succeed by his daughter Smt. Shashikala Kakodkar. Smt. Shashikala ran a stable government for a span of seven years from 1973 to 1979. She was the 4th chief minister of Goa. She provided a stable government from 1973 to 1979 after which her government was toppled with the support of the Congress High command in Delhi.
Sucheta Kriplani (born Sucheta Mazumdar) (1908-1974) was an Indian freedom fighter and politician. She became the first woman to be elected Chief Minister of a state.
