The 30th Secretary of Commerce and the first ever African American to have held that office, Ronald Harmon Brown died in a plane crash in his fourth year in office. He had been travelling along with 34 others on board an Air Force CT-43 as part of an official Trade Mission when his plane crashed in the mountains of Croatia in the Balkans.

Ronald Harmon Brown was born on the 1st of August 1941 in Washington, D.C. His was a middle class family from Harlem. He was been part of the army which he had joined in 1962. He served in Korea and in Europe. He had graduated from the Middlebury College that is located in Vermont and later got a degree in law in 1970 from St. John's University. The Ron Brown Award was established by President Bill Clinton in his honour.
