It was in the year 1607 that registered the establishment of the first ever English permanent settlement in North America, which was called Jamestown. The money for funding and establishing this company came from a joint stock company known as the London Company. It was during the time of King James I who actually granted a formal charter (a written permission) to the London company for enabling the inception of a permanent English settlement in North America.
Initially the settlement of Jamestown started with a total of only 144 men who had come in the pursuit of gold, which was actually the prime reason for motivating most of the Europeans to come to America after Christopher Columbus discovered this continent in the year 1492. In the initial phases of their settlement, the English colonists were in a very bad condition, almost starving to death. Nevertheless things improved later on for them.
