It actually started in North America and became one of the 13 colonies in 1630. John Winthrop had asked King James for land over in the americas in 1628 and was granted permission, so in 1630 he and 700 other Puritans set up the Massachusetts Bay Colony for those Puritans who wanted religious freedom. They allowed non-puritans to live there too, but they weren't allowed to participate in the government.

In the year 1630, a group of Puritans started a colony, which was called the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The main reason for their migration to America from England was of a religious nature. In other words, the Puritans were not happy with the system of religion in England. Firstly there was an obligation in England to belong to the Church of England, which was not what the Puritans wanted.

They believed in a simpler lifestyle and believed that churches should not be so ornate and opulent and should instead reflect the glow of simplicity and modesty. Another thing that they believed in was the increased study of Bible. When the year 1630 beheld the establishment of the Puritan settlement in Massachusetts Bay Colony, it was somewhat ironic to behold the same religious traditions practised by Puritans as it was practised in England. They did not allow people to follow other religions in their colony and suffrage was only applicable for the members of the church.
