World Environment Day was created to invoke political and public action towards issues concerned with the environment. It is celebrated every June 5, the first day that the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment first began in 1973 which took place in Stokholm, Sweden. Every year since, a different city around the world hosts this important holiday with a specific environmental theme.
During the celebration of World Environment Day, specific agenda on the state of the earth are discussed. These include:
-Giving a personal voice to environmental issues
-To promote the responsibilities of communities around the world toward sustainable development
-To empower people to become agents of change in addressing environmental issues
-To bring forth new partnerships that work together in promoting a more secure and stable future for the environment and all communities involved
World Environment Day is celebrated each year with festivities around the world, such as street rallies, environment-themed concerts, bike parades, tree planting, recycling and clean-up campaigns, poster and essay competitions in schools, and many more. These are intended to create awareness of the importance in addressing various issues while making them more approachable to people, especially in fostering awareness among the poor and the young. World leaders also take an oath each year to commit to doing their part in saving the environment.
There are also specific symbols attached to the celebration of World Environment Day, which is noticeable in all cities undertaking its celebration. The main colors are those that depict the earth and its natural resources, such as blue, green, and brown. Images of the earth’s various features such as beaches, snowy mountains, clean rivers, and various flora and fauna are also prominently displayed during festivities. If you want to help celebrate this important holiday but there is nothing planned in your hometown, you can take it upon yourself to do environmental acts such as plant trees and clean up streets.
