The war in Iraq is usually referred to as the Gulf War (1990-91) and was waged between Iraq on one side and a coalition force of about 35 nations on the other. The coalition forces were led by the United States and the war was mandated by the United Nations targeted at liberating Kuwait from Iraqi invasion.

The total coalition forces sent to war in Iraq numbered about 9,955,000 out of which about 550,000 were from the United States alone. There were huge casualties on both sides. US alone lost over 400 soldiers in the Iraq war and about 1,500 soldiers were seriously wounded.

The official statements on numbers of dead and injured in the Gulf War have been controversial. The Department of Veterans Affairs declared about 183,000 US veterans of the Gulf War to be permanently disabled by the year 2000. About 30% of soldiers who came back from the Gulf War suffer a number of serious symptoms the causes of which are not fully explained.
