I do not know how you can say it is not working well right now since no democracies exist. What government is a democracy? America is a Constitutional Republic, not a democracy.
In my opinion democracy, communism or socialism could all work if they were enacted as they were meant to be. Unfortunately, when people are put in positions of great power, they are corrupted by the money. As an analogy, privatisation is supposed to work in such a way as to see the profits from the richer people trickle down to the less fortunate. In reality this never happens as big fat administrators line their pockets with ridiculous salaries. Governments are the same. In so called democracies the rich get richer while the poor get poorer. Society is divided into classes and sub-classes. In the end the country becomes a dictatorship ran by many wealthy mini dictators who hold the purse strings. So , in a perfect world democracy would be lovely, but as long as there are greedy men around, it is only a dream. :}
India is not a happy democracy; parts of it are communist and the notion of democracy is bribe-centered. There's still a caste system here, which means power is not equal with each individual. The United States of America is a republic, not a democracy, as BillZBub has posted here. I'm sure the other countries cited are also pseudodemocracies.
Democracy is just a politically correct term for "mob rule". That's why it cannot work on any scale, from the set of Survivor to the citizens of the greatest country in the world.

I don't believe that any true democracies exist. I see how the world works. It is all about money and power. The only thing that would change that is to remake the nature of humankind.
Our Constitution was passed in Colonial time. At that time, the whites were the dominant group; our industrial society was still in the developing stage. Races and occupations were not the national interest concern or the national agenda. Therefore, our Congress was consisted of representatives who purely represented only local interests (states and locals), not national interests. Two-house Congress cannot represent all interests, national and local. I am of opinion that there has to be another house which shall represent all races and all walks of life-national interests and that we have to combine senate and representative into one house to represent local interests.
