The Industrial Revolution which happened in England in the 18th century brought about major changes in the socio- economic growth of Birmingham. It also resulted in the technologic as well as the cultural expansion. As new machineries were invented, manual labor was replaced by the industrial development.

Businesses which did well in the city during this period were known as the Gun Quarter and Jewellery Quarter. Pen manufacturing started in Birmingham which revolutionised writing. New railway carriages, steam engines, bicycles and automobiles were designed and constructed. Birmingham's rapid economic growth led to the mingling of cultures as people from Asia, China and rest of the world arrived for work. People found swelling prospects for employment in the new mills and factories. The machines brought an enormous change in the textile industry that left the weavers unemployed.
