We finally, in a modern Europe, saw the full horror of mans inhumanity to man, our capacity to dislike the unlike and the lowest ebb to which humanity can sink. In Europe,at least, it led to a root and branch re-examination of the way we govern ourselves and and our attitude to each other. It is probable that the human rights gains for all ethnic minorities in Europe would never have had such a focus without the holocaust. It took 6,000,000 deaths though.
