Time magazine's person of the year for 2015 is Angela Merkel, German chancellor. Runner-up is Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, leader of ISIS. Third is Donald Trump, US embarrassment. How do YOU feel about those? What criteria are used for the selections?

Time profiles a person, group, idea or object that "for better or for
worse...has done the most to influence the events of the year".

I understand their criteria but would much rather it didn't include murderers.

I was curious about the criteria also. Here's the full line from Wikipedia: Person of the Year (called Man of the Year until 1999 is an annual issue of the United States news magazine Time that features and profiles a person, group, idea or object that "for better or for worse...has done the most to influence the events of the year"

I say Merkel should get it. She influences more than Trump. Trump just spouts out what racists were already thinking. Merkel actually influences and makes changes. And I don't know about you but I'd rather not have ISIS on the cover of Time Magazine.

President Rouhani was also a candidate. I really wanted him to get it. At least he ended the whole nuclear discussions for good. Besides, I had voted him for president:-D

I noticed that President Rouhani was among those listed. I didn't list everyboidy, but the reason I chose the names I did was for the chance of comparing Trump to al Baghdadi. It's not very auspicious company for him to be keeping.

Years back Time had the Iranian Ayatollah as man of the year during the Iran crisis holding the hostages. So it comes as no surprise they would have the leader of ISIS in the run for person of the year.

When te Shah visited Australia in the early 1970s I provided a telex link for his entourage. I never met him, of course, but spent a couple of hours chatting to one of his ministers. I liked the guy and hoped that he survived the blood-letting when Khomeini staged his coup.

Calling it a coup may not be right. It was a revolution. It was a mistake. But it was a revolution. Khomeini was popular.
But now the ironic thing is when we Iranians talk about Shah we say god bless him. People made a mistake. So bad we cannot go back in time and undo our mistakes. We only move forward.
