The phrase postal code is used to define the codes which are used by the postal services of every country in the world to broadly divide the large geographical areas of the country in to zones. The purpose of using codes to broadly divide the large geographical areas of the country in the world into zones is to simplify the delivery of the post and ensure that every piece of mail is delivered to the correct address.

In Canada, the postal code of each zone in the country is a string that consists of six characters. These are a combination of letters of the alphabet and numbers (that is the alphanumeric format). They are written in the letter of the alphabet/number/letter of the alphabet space number/letter of the alphabet/number format, for example A1A 1A1. A postal code is also known as the zonal improvement plan (which is abbreviated as the ZIP code) or the postal index number (which is abbreviated as the PIN code).
