The Black Death, which has the real name of the Bubonic Plague was rife in Europe between 1346 and 1353. It was a highly contagious virus that would spread from person to person and killed within a week.
The black death killed between 30% and 60% of Europe's population when it was rife.
The signs of the plague were obvious, which meant that people did not have to declare that they had the illness. This was something that you had to do back then as to save others from catching any illness that you had. This was also very embarrassing for people, especially richer families.
The main physical features of the plague were; tumours, black spots and vomiting blood.
There were many tails of how this plague could be avoided although the only true way to avoid it was to be put in quarantine as you should stay away from anyone that had the illness. The richer families tried to avoid the plague by moving to the less populated countryside areas of Europe so that they would be less exposed to the people that were contagious. Although this was a wise thing to do, this did not save everyone that moved to the countryside.
Although quarantine was the best and probably only option, many people went to see priests and other religious figures, this was detrimental in some cases as there would be a lot of people with plague at the churches that you could catch it from. Pope Clement VI sat between two fires and blew at people as a cure for the black death. This would not have been a cure but being around the heat of the two flames would have helped as the heat will have killed some of the plague bacteria.
