Our country was founded by political activists who based the foundation of our nation on God and good morals. When the concept of the Golden Rule is completely gone and when the last decent person is afraid to stand up and condemn the hate mongers and the evil doers, when we can ignore the desperate pleas of the elderly, destitute and defenseless, we as a nation are doomed. So, yes, I believe we need to have leaders who are of good moral character, not simply lead with an iron fist of threats, blame and finger pointing to intimidate those who do not agree with them.
