The policy of Assimilation failed for a number of reasons.
The government found that it was best to allow Indigenous people to express their cultural beliefs and largely failed because of the recognition of past mistakes made by their government.
During the time of Integration (1967 to 1972) Aboriginals were given some equal rights and the relationship between the government and the Indigenous peoples of Australia began to improve.
Increased funds were given to ensure housing, food, health and education were not neglected because of lack of funds due to unemployment due to racism etc. A Minister for Aboriginal Affairs was elected. However,Integration was still seen by the Aboriginal people as an extension of assimilation as their affairs were still mostly controlled by non-Aboriginal people.
