Festivals are there to have fun and at the same time remember their importance about it.

For example, in the Hindu religion there is such thing as the Durga Puja. This festival is there to mark the five days in which Goddess Durga is going to meet her parents, here on Earth. During those days many people dance around and at the same time pray to her so that their wishes can be fulfilled.

Another example can be that in the Muslim religion, the Muslim devotees celebrate Ramadan over in the summer. This event is to make people experience the hardships of the homeless people, not having to have food. While the fun part is that, friends and family can gather around and have Iftar, during the evening.

The final example is Christmas. Lets say every Christian devotees celebrate this day on every December, on the day of the 25th. Christmas is there to mark the birth of Jesus and family and friends give gifts to each other. In addition, they pay their visits to the church and pray for their wishes to come true.
