What Was The Role Of NATO During The Cold War?

Cold war refers to the Post World War II situation that involved US and its allies and USSR and its allies. It lasted from 1940-1980. NATO stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organization and it was established in 1949 as a Military alliance. It did not engage in any military activity during the Cold war.
