France fighting to keep control of its empire
As far as I know, the cause for the war in Asia was the Japanese invasion of Manchuria, which sparked various conflicts known as 'incidents' between China and Japan, which eventually escalated into full scale war between the two.
The immediate causes of World War II were the German invasion of Poland and the Japanese attacks on Pearl Harbor and British and Dutch colonies.
