Mostly because of advances in farming which freed a considerable portion of the population from subsistance agriculture and permitted a rise health and life expectancy as well as in income and living standards. Primary amoung the series of farm implement improvements: The self clearing plow share, by Jethro Tull. It was these very population surges which led to the overcrowding of Europe that in large measure fed the mass emigrations to the new world.
