The officers and the representatives elected by the people run the country and carry out the functions of the government. The United States is an example of a republic. The former president of United States, Thomas Jefferson had proposed in the Declaration of Independence in 1776 to reject the monarchy of the British and turn into republican citizens. The republican form of government has remained constant in the United States.
