The protectorate of Northern Nigeria and the Colony of and Protectorate of Southern Nigeria were merged by Sir Frederick Lugard in 1914 and he became the first Governor General of Nigeria. He stayed Governor General till 1919. Nigeria finally became free in 1959 and that's when Federal Elections were held. On 1st October 1960, Nigeria gained independence from Britain.
