Political equality means equality of authority. It means that no person has the right to rule another person. That's what Jefferson meant by equality when he referred to it in the Declaration of Independence.

Political equality is an important aspect of being a United States citizen and something that, to this day, not everyone enjoys. However, the "haves" do not generally realize that there are still "have-nots" in today's society. The extent of how much of an equal voice the citizens have over governmental decisions is a significant issue that is most troubling. One of the fundamental principles in a democracy is supposedly the consideration of the preferences and general interests of all. This is displayed in the way of freedom of speech, and one-person/one-vote equality. However, how can this happen when 20 times more people are voting for American Idol, rather than the Governor or President? Political participation provides a mechanism by which citizens can communicate information about their beliefs, interests, and desires within the government. Conveying these ideals, preferences, and needs is a way to generate pressure for response. Equal activity is crucial for political equality of citizens.

Closely tied to the concept of individual equality is the concept of political equality, in which each person has the right to participate in politics on equal terms. The political community, which began with this nation's forefathers as white male property-owners, now encompasses all races and genders. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 made racial discrimination in voting illegal, and specifically sought to provide a remedy to the number of African Americans who were being kept from participating in the voting process due to various forms of racial discrimination taking place in certain southern states. The ideal of political equality in this country has come to be known by the phrase, "one person, one vote," underlying the concept that the right to participate in the voting process is available to all.
