Congo is basically a Democratic Republic. It is located in the center of Africa and has the third largest area in the region. It has Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Zambia, Angola etc as its neighbors.

Congo used to be a colony of Belgium since 1908. It was directly ruled by the Belgian government that was elected through public voting. During this time, it was referred to as the Belgian Congo.

After passage of many decades, nationalist movement in the country took over. The "Mouvement National Congolais" won the elections of the parliament in the year 1960. As a result of these elections, Patrice Lumumba was elected as the Prime Minister and Joseph Kasayubu was elected as the President. They announced independence of Congo on June 30, 1960.
