Germany first became unified as one whole large country in 1871. Before that time it was simply a state that was made up a number of different small countries such as Prussia, Bavaria etc.
During the Cold, Germany was divided under the Hitler government into East and West Germany and was separated by the Berlin Wall. The only way to pass from East Germany to West Germany was through a gate called Checkpoint Charlie. The Berlin Wall resulted in families being separated many years. The Wall remained in place until recently when in 1990, a revolution by the German people lead to the tearing down of the wall. Before the construction workers arrived, the majority of people actually began to tear the wall down themselves either by hand of with hammers and other tools. Twenty years later, Germany is still peacefully united after such a long time of separation.
