They didn't join the British Empire. They were originally part of the (old) British Empire in the colonial days of North America, but, unlike the US which declared independence and kicked out the British, the Canadians were happy to be separate but still part of the British "Commonwealth." They certainly made it clear that they didn't want to be part of the US after independence.
