As Nurses Day exists to honour and celebrate nurses worldwide, you will want to write a speech that stands in strong affirmation of the immeasurable contributions that nurses make to the health industry. Your speech should be warm but impersonal, acting as an inclusive invitation for nurses to take pride in their work and for non-nurses to extend their gratitude to the men and women who devote themselves to caring for the ill.

Ask yourself what nursing means to you and determine what you want to celebrate most. Make a long list of topics that you can touch upon and don't limit yourself quantity-wise. Once you've spilled all your thoughts onto your paper, underline the ones that mean the most to you. If you've done a lot of underlining, grab a highlighter and try to narrow it down a little more until you've got about five to ten solid topics.

Next, try to figure out how you'll connect them. What is their unifying theme? How will you connect one topic to the next? See if you can determine a natural flow between these points. If you can't, then go back to your list and search for good connectors. From there, build yourself a general outline of what you want to say, then figure out how you want to say it.

This means that your next step is to set the tone of your speech. Who is your audience and how will you feel most comfortable communicating with them? Some people say that everyone has one natural voice, but I disagree. We all have different voices that we use under different circumstances. If it helps, try to visualise your audience and just start rambling. The right tone will come to you.

As soon as you're sure of the what and how of your speech, you can begin to write it out. Give yourself a lot of time for this in case you're hit by an untimely case of writer's block. Take some breaks from writing, too. You want your speech to be a light and uplifting piece of writing, so you don't want to feel down while writing it.

End it with a call for celebration.

Good luck, and I hope your speech is a smashing success.
