The first black American President was named John Hanson. The reason the United States doesn't recognize this man is, he was president before American was United by the Declaration. There has never been a black American president.  Jesse Jackson ran quite a  bit back in the 80s but was never the nominee.  If elected, Barack Obama will be the first black American president. 

There has never been a black president, unless one of them had a black grandparent or someone in the family line that was black, but still isn't considered black.
