2002 was a busy year for the world and it all began on January 1st on New Year's Day when Euro bank notes were released and became legal tender in 12 of the European Union's members states.
A few days later, Michael Jackson picked up the Artist of the Century award at the AMAs (the American Music Awards) in the same month that America froze the assets of Osama Bin Laden. We then celebrated the winter olympics which were held in Salt Lake City in Utah.
Another major event of 2002 was the US invasion of Afghanistan - a war that is still going on to this day. Shortly after that major event, it was announced the Queen Mother of England had died.
2002 also saw the World Cup Football tournament being held in Japan and South Korea and also, the launch of Nasa Mars Odyssey.
Brazil then went to go on and win their fifth World Cup victory and took home the cup and the whole world witnessed a beautiful total eclipse!
On January 31st, it was announced that a huge part of the Antarctic Larsen Ice Shelf was disintegrating consuming over 1200 miles over 35 days and on February 3rd, Costa Rica held presidential and congressional elections.
On February 13th, the Queen of England gave former New York city mayor Rudolph Giuliani a knighthood and in August, the European Floods began tearing through European countries creating utter devastation.
In Virginia, US Airlines announced bankruptcy, around the same time that Switzerland joined the United Nations.
In September, the Civil War started in Côte d'Ivoire, right near the time that the second biggest airline 'United Airlines' also declares bankruptcy.
