The barbarity of the rebel sepoys was clearly illustrated by the events at Cawnapore and other military establishments... The massacre of women and children, the utter lack of human feelings for captives, etc. No wonder the British tied captured sepoys to the mouths of cannons and fired them - if they suspected they had taken part in the atrocities. The actions of the mutineers clearly showed their savagery, and the British had every right to seek retribution.
